New Delhi. While hearing the objectionable remarks of a judge of the Karnataka High Court, the Supreme Court on Wednesday instructed the judges not to be careless while commenting on any community. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Wednesday heard the controversial remarks of a judge of the Karnataka High Court, in which the judge had called a part of Bengaluru as Pakistan. The judge had also commented on a woman lawyer.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice said – You cannot call any part of the country Pakistan. This is against the fundamental principle of the unity of the country. It is worth noting that the video of this comment of Justice V. Srishananda of the Karnataka High Court went viral, after which the Supreme Court itself started hearing the case. After the video went viral, the Karnataka High Court banned live streaming of the proceedings without permission.
Regarding this, the Chief Justice said – To bring maximum transparency in the court process, it needs to be brought to light as much as possible. Whatever happens in the court should not be suppressed. Everything should not be closed. After this, Justice Srishananda apologized to the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice’s bench has accepted the apology and closed the case.
But before this, while hearing the case, the Chief Justice’s bench said – Careless comments show a person’s biased attitude, especially when they are made on a gender or community. During the hearing, the judge should avoid making such comments which are against any community or can harm it. We are closing this case, but in the era of electronic age, judges and lawyers should make appropriate comments and adapt their behavior according to this era.
