Stockholm. The names of the Nobel Prize winners for the year 2024 in the field of Medicine or Physiology have been announced. American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun will be awarded the Nobel Prize for 2024 for their contribution in the field of medicine. The Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute on Monday announced the winners for their contributions to the field of physiology or medicine for the discovery of microRNAs and post-transcriptional gene regulation. Scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun will be awarded an amount of 11 million Swedish kronor.
Indeed, Ambrose and Ruvkun have discovered a fundamental principle governing the way genes are regulated. He discovered microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that play important roles in gene regulation. His fundamental findings uncovered an entirely new principle of gene regulation, which was essential for multicellular organisms, including humans. Their findings reveal that the human genome harbors more than a thousand microRNAs. These are proving to be fundamentally important to the way organisms develop and function. Let us tell you that Ambrose, born in New Hampshire, did his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the year 1979.
He has done MA from Cambridge. He currently holds the position of Professor of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Whereas, Ruvkun was born in California in 1952. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1982. He is a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School. The Nobel Prize is announced every year by the Nobel Assembly of 50 professors of the Karolinska Institute. Celebrities who have contributed in different fields are honored with Nobel Prize.
