Navratri 2024 : Ujjain city, one of the four major mythological cities of the world, is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Mata Satti. Here the world’s only south facing Jyotirlinga Mahakaleshwar is present in its Mahakal form. This place is not only famous for Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, but it also has historical importance as it is the city of Emperor Vikramaditya. The Harsiddhi temple located here is especially famous for Tantric meditation.

On the holy festival of Shardiya Navratri, Naya India is taking you to Harsiddhi Mata Temple of Ujjain. This temple is situated on the banks of Rudra Sagar, one of the seven seas, at a distance of just 500 meters from the Mahakal Temple and its history is more than 2000 years old. Ujjain is the only place where both Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peetha are present together, it is seen as the union of Shiva and Shakti.

According to mythological beliefs, when Goddess Sati’s body was divided into 51 parts, her elbow fell at this holy place, due to which this Shakti Peetha was established. This Shakti Peeth of Ujjain is a unique place from religious and historical point of view, where devotees can worship Shiva and Shakti together.

Reason for name Harsiddhi Mata

There was great terror spread on the earth by the twin demons named Chand-Mund. One day both the demons reached Mount Kailash, where Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva were residing. When the gatekeeper and Nandi stopped them from going inside, the two demons got angry and attacked Nandi and injured him. This made Lord Shiva extremely angry and he remembered Goddess Chandi. (Navratri 2024)

Goddess Chandi appeared and killed both the demons. Lord Shiva was very pleased with this great deed of his and said – O Goddess, by killing these wicked people, you have freed the world from their terror. Now you reside in the Mahakal forest in the name of Harsiddhi and fulfill every wish of your devotees, provide them with every success, and remove their sufferings. For this reason, Mata Chandi is worshiped as Harsiddhi, and she is present in Mahakal forest to fulfill every wish of her devotees.

The adorable goddess of Emperor Vikramaditya

It is believed that once upon a time, Emperor Vikramaditya used to perform Siddhi in the temple of Harsiddhi Mata. Even today, many Tantriks perform various rituals here to attain Siddhi. King Vikramaditya got the Siddhi of Shri Yantra here. King Vikramaditya ruled the entire country on the basis of this and was called a just king. Every Siddhi which accomplishes every task is basically Mangal Shakti Chandi.

According to folk tales, Vikramaditya had cut off his head and offered it to the goddess every 12th year to please the goddess. He did this 11 times. Every time the head came back, but after the 12th time the head was cut and offered, it did not come back. This was considered the end of his 144-year rule. Some vermillion coated heads are kept in the Harsiddhi temple. It is believed that he is the head of Vikramaditya. (Navratri 2024)

This is the belief behind the formation of Shakti Peetha

According to the scriptures, King Daksh Prajapati, father of Mother Sati, organized a huge yagya, in which all the gods and goddesses were invited, but the invitation was not sent to Lord Shiva. When Mother Sati reached the Yagya, she came to know about this humiliating thing. She could not bear this insult and being sad, she dedicated herself to the fire of Yagya.

When Lord Shiva got the news of this sacrifice and death of Mother Sati, he became extremely angry. Deep in grief, Shiva picked up Sati’s dead body and started wandering across the earth. To calm this sad and angry form of Shiva, Lord Vishnu used Sudarshan Chakra and cut the body of Mother Sati into 51 pieces. It is believed that wherever these pieces of Sati’s body fell, Shakti Peethas were formed there.

The temple of Harsiddhi Mata was established at the place where Sati’s elbow fell in Ujjain. That is why this temple is known as Harsiddhi, and is famous as Shakti Peeth, where devotees pray to the Goddess to fulfill their wishes.
