Drug trade seems to be the most flourishing business in India. Till some time ago, only Udta Punjab was discussed and the trend of drug addiction was increasing among the youth of Punjab. Apart from this, its culture was there in the high society of some big cities and metros. But now many states are falling prey to it one after the other. During the recently concluded Haryana Assembly elections, many journalists, apart from election coverage, reported on the growing drug culture in Haryana. It is surprising that in a state called ‘Haryana, a country where milk and curd is eaten’, the culture of drug addiction is increasing rapidly. This could be the effect of Punjab. Under the influence of Punjab and Haryana, Delhi and the entire NCR seem to be in the grip of drug addiction. Recently, after a major action in Delhi and Gurugram, the Narcotics Control Bureau seized 560 kg of drugs, the value of which is said to be more than five and a half thousand crore rupees.
Two days later, drugs worth Rs 1,814 crore were seized from Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. For the first time, drugs have been seized at this level in Bhopal. Earlier, Bhopal was not even discussed in the matter of drugs. People must not have forgotten, when in February this year, more than three tonnes of drugs were caught off the coast of Gujarat. In May last year, NCB had seized two and a half tonnes of methamphetamine in a ship coming from Pakistan, whose value was estimated at Rs 12 thousand crore. Are such large quantities of drugs coming into the retail trade?
Experts believe that no small fat man or one or two people can order drugs in this quantity. If drugs are coming in tonnes through Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, then there must be an organized gang behind it. It is also a common belief that the average chance of police and other agencies catching a banned product is one in a hundred. That means if a hundred consignments come out, one will be caught. So, by looking at the amount of drugs being seized, it can be estimated how many drugs are going into the market.
