Ever since the formation of the new Lok Sabha, there was a tussle for the permanent committee of Parliament. In the previous Lok Sabha, Congress had only one permanent committee. But this time it claimed four permanent committees. It had put pressure on the government. Its pressure worked and it got the chairmanship of four permanent committees. Congress has got the chairmanship of three permanent committees in Lok Sabha and one in Rajya Sabha. Among the opposition parties, Samajwadi Party, DMK and Trinamool Congress have also got the chairmanship of one permanent committee each. The government accepted the demand of Congress for four permanent committees but did not give the permanent committee of the department of its choice.
Congress had demanded the chairmanship of the standing committee of the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Apart from this, it also wanted the standing committee of the Ministry of Social Justice and also demanded the chairmanship of the Ministry of Law and Justice. But the government has not given any of these standing committees to Congress. It seems that all those ministries were deliberately left out, which Congress had demanded. Congress has got the chairmanship of the standing committee of the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Rural Development in the Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, Congress has been given the chairmanship of the standing committee of the Ministry of Education.
