In a statement, the UN Secretary-General expressed his condolences to the Carter family, the US government and ordinary citizens in this moment of mourning.
The Secretary General said that former President Carter made important contributions to international peace and security through his leadership. These include an agreement to limit the number of nuclear weapons, the historic Camp David Accords and the Panama Canal Agreement, among other initiatives.
According to the UN chief, “President Carter’s commitment to international peace and human rights has been fully realized since he left office.”
He plays an important role in mediating efforts to resolve violent conflicts, monitoring electoral processes, promoting democracy and disease prevention and eradication.
As a result of these efforts, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 and helped strengthen the work of the United Nations.
“President Carter will be remembered for his solidarity with the powerless, his ever-present civility and his unwavering belief in the common good and our common humanity.”
Secretary-General Guterres said his legacy as a peacemaker, champion of human rights and humanitarian will long be remembered.
An inspiring legacy
The head of the United Nations General Assembly, Philemon Young, also mourned the death of the former US president.
He said he had unwavering faith in the United Nations and its ideals and had worked tirelessly for human rights, democracy and global health. As a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, he embodied the spirit of international cooperation and diplomacy.

He expressed confidence that his memory would inspire future generations to strive for peace, justice and human dignity.
