BRIEF NEWS: Demands for probe into Afghanistan attack, mourning over plane crash in Kazakhstan

In a social media message on Thursday, the UN mission expressed outrage at the large number of casualties in the December 24 attack.

UNAMA calls for accountability for these incidents, prevention of future attacks and protection of victims’ rights.

The UN mission noted that under international law, armed forces have an obligation to exercise due diligence to ensure the protection of civilians during hostilities.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed deep concern over the news that at least 20 children were killed in this attack.

UNICEF South Asia Regional Director Sanjay Wijesekera expressed his deepest condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. He reiterated that children should never be the target of attacks.

Air crash in Kazakhstan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep sorrow over a plane crash in Kazakhstan.

A plane en route to Grozny from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku crashed in western Kazakhstan on Wednesday, killing 38 people, according to media reports.

Among the dead were citizens of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Russia. The top UN official expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

The UN Agency for Global Cooperation in Airspace, the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed their grief over the accident in their messages on social media.

Syria: Refugees are returning

According to news media, Syria’s de facto authority, led by the Hayat-Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, named Anas Khattab as head of the intelligence service.

Anas Khattab is currently under UN sanctions due to his links to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda.

The HTS group is also banned by the United Nations. In 2015, the Security Council passed a resolution calling on member states to prevent and counter terrorist acts carried out by HTS’s predecessor, the Al-Nusra Front.

Syria’s decades-long civil war has displaced millions, but after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, thousands of refugees have begun to return to their homes.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported this information on Thursday.

At the same time, according to the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), there are still food shortages in some parts of the country, but bread production and distribution is normalizing in most areas.
