Britain's Tom Fletcher heads OCHA and is appointed UN Under-Secretary-General

Tom Fletcher will replace Britain’s Martin Griffiths, who recently retired from the post, and UN chief Antonio Guterres thanked him for his service and commitment to the world body.

Tom Fletcher is currently the Principal of Hertford College of the famous University of Oxford in Britain and the Vice President of the Conference of Colleges of the same University. He has strong experience in leading transformational change in organizations and applying his understanding of diplomacy at senior levels.

Tom Fletcher previously served as Global Strategy Director of the Global Education Business Coalition (2015-2019) and led the work of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Refugee Education Initiative.

Tom also served as Britain’s Ambassador to Lebanon from 2011 to 2015 and served as Foreign and Development Policy Advisor to three British Prime Ministers.

Tom Fletcher is considered an expert in development, diplomacy, technology, democracy and communication. His skills seem to be a mix of technology skills and public diplomacy.

Tom worked in close liaison with the United Nations during his diplomatic tours in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

Tom Fletcher is a graduate of Oxford University and an honorary professor at New York University. Apart from proficiency in English and French, he also has knowledge of Arabic and Kiswahili.
