Business support to end plastic pollution

The United Nations Trade and Development Institute (UNCTAD) warned Thursday that although plastic is directly involved in the triple crisis of the world – pollution, biodiversity reduction and reduction of climate change, however, there is still no extensive international system for plastic production, trade and settlement control.

In 2023, global plastic production has reached 43.6 million metric tons, which stands over $ 1.1 trillion. It was 5 percent of the total business.

However, 75 percent of the plastic made of plastic has been turned into garbage, most of which have reached the ocean and ecosystem.

This pollution is becoming a serious threat to food protection and human health. Specifically, in small islands and coastal developing countries, where the ability to deal with it is limited.

Promote environmentally friendly options

Ankatad, environmentally supported sustainable plastic options, supports fees and jer-fee systems for promotion.

These options are often made from natural sources such as minerals, plants or animals and can be re -used or transformed into fertilizer.

In 2021, 5.6 percent of these national options reached $ 485 billion with annual growth in developing countries.

Fee discrimination

UNCTAD has made it clear that in the last 5 years, import tariffs on plastic and rubber products have been reduced from 34 percent to only 7.2 percent, making these products “artificially cheap”.

On the other hand, on average, 14.4 percent fees are being imposed on sustainable options like paper, bamboo, natural fiber and marine algae, which makes their trade expensive and limited.

According to UNCTAD, this discrimination prevents or slows investing in developing countries, especially in developing countries.

At this time 98 percent of plastic fossil fuels are made from fuel. If it is not controlled, the emissions and environmental damage will increase.

Promoting sustainable trade

However, different rules applicable in each country, which increase the cost of discrimination and rules to meet the rules.

Due to these different and complex rules, it becomes difficult for small business and low-income exporters to participate in sustainable business and take advantage.

The issue of legal agreements on plastic pollution, which began in 2022, will reach the last stage in Geneva next week.
