Call for increased leadership of people with disabilities for an inclusive future

“This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities reminds us that more than ever we need the leadership of people with disabilities,” Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his message. He highlights their important role as change agents and leaders in communities around the world.

‘Without us we have nothing’

The day comes at a time when countries have recently adopted agreements on the future. Under it, chronic inequalities faced by more than one billion people with disabilities around the world are addressed. The theme for 2024 – “Promoting the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future” – is the core principles of the disability rights movement. Without us, nothing for us” strengthens

Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) have played an important role in promoting inclusive development, through leading community-led initiatives, advocating for universal access to basic services, and through data collection, consultation and accountability efforts.

Global Challenges

This year the day is being celebrated at a time when there is widespread awareness of the need to remove barriers that prevent the participation of persons with disabilities in all areas of society.

The Secretary-General warned that “persons with disabilities are disproportionately affected by poverty and inequality, from the crises, conflicts and climate disasters that plague our world.” He said these challenges are “compounded by persistent discrimination, stigma and barriers to access to basic rights and services.”

Shaping the Digital Future

This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities focuses on the role of persons with disabilities in technological innovation. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized that the participation of persons with disabilities in technological progress is essential.

“It is important to recognize the important role that people with disabilities play in shaping a future equipped with digital and assistive technologies… they become agents of change in communities,” the Secretary-General said.

The secretary-general said that as emerging technologies are increasingly integrated into everyday life, people with disabilities are “increasingly included in those decision-making processes”. “They should be actively involved in issues that affect their lives.”

Looking to the future

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that next year’s World Summit for Social Development is a unique opportunity to advance these commitments.

The General Secretary said, “Persons with disabilities are agents of change and builders of peace in every community. He is also a leader.” The Secretary-General called for collective action to ensure inclusion and representation at all levels of society.

“On this important day, and every day, let us join hands with people with disabilities to build an inclusive and sustainable future for all,” said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
