The United Nations World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says that the impact of extreme weather and climate change is hurting everything in the socio-economic development of Africa and making hunger, insecurity and displacement more serious.
The average surface temperature of Africa was 0.86 degrees higher than 8-220 in 2021, while this difference was recorded in North Africa at 1.28 degrees Celsius.
Increase the record at sea temperature
WMO says a record increased at sea temperature has been recorded.
The temperature of the sea surface rises the highest in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, causing the entire marine region of Africa to fall into the overwhelm waves of intense sea last year, especially in the tropical Atlantic.
The WMO’s Chief Celest warned that Africa’s climate change is a serious and rapid growing problem. Many countries are fighting the floods due to excess rainfall, other countries, drought and water crisis.
Africa is extremely vulnerable to climate change, mainly due to the use of fossil fuels by rich countries.
Millions of people displaced
According to the WMO, floods, heat and drought made Lakh millions of people homeless across Africa in 2021.
El Nino Status, which was active from 2021 to 2021, influenced the rainfall.
Only in the flood of September 2021 in the north of Nigeria, 20 people died and Lakh millions of people were displaced.
In West Africa, rainfall was affected by 40 million people, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe were the most severe droughts of two decades, causing severe reduction in grain production.
Hit the hot weather
According to the WMO, Africa has a growing threat for thermal health and development. The previous decade has been considered as the hottest decades so far and 2024 was the warmest or second most popular year.
In March 2021, the school had to close the school when the temperature in South Sudan reached 45 degrees Celsius.
According to UNICEF, in 2021, the education of about 20 million children worldwide was damaged due to extreme weather, many of which were in sub-companions in Africa.
The irregular weather of South Sudan influenced farming, which are already forced to escape the people who are already displaced in the war.
In October 2021, the flood affected 100 million people in this country with a population of 1.5 million. Billions of cattle were swept away and the diseases were spread due to stagnant water.
South Sudan is either fighting floods or droughts. FAO Representative – “This cycle of floods and droughts affect the country throughout the year.”
He said, “In recent years, the flood has become faster, ordinary and severe. Now some rain can cause floods because the soil is already wet and saturated.”
Some remedy
WMO Doctor Ernest Affesimama told reporters, “Climate adaptation and tolerance are very important in countries where there is no water resources for agricultural irrigation.
Although the process of lifting salt from sea water can be solved for some countries, this is not possible for many African countries.
Investing resources in the climate adaptation system is more important, such as pre -Warning systems.
“The climate change of Africa is a complex economic, environmental and social challenge and its long -term stability and equality,” said Dr. Dwit Solomon, a part of the AICCRA research.
He said, “Africa is suffering from lots of climate change. A continent that is already financially fought is now facing this extra risk.”
