Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh dies, UN chief mourns

Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India twice from May 2004 to May 2014. Before this, he served as the finance minister of the country in the nineties.

The former prime minister was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi when his health deteriorated on Thursday evening, but he could not be saved.

Stephanie Tremblay, the UN chief’s assistant spokesperson, issued a statement on Friday on behalf of the secretary-general, in which she mourned the death of the Indian leader.

Secretary-General Guterres said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had played an important role in India’s recent history, particularly in shaping the country’s economic direction.

“As Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Mr. Singh led a period of strong economic growth and development in India.”

“Under his leadership, India strengthened its cooperation with the United Nations and actively contributed to global initiatives and partnerships.”

The UN chief expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the Government of India and the people of the country.

The United Nations Office in India also expressed grief over the death of the former prime minister. The UN office said in a message on social media that “Dr. Manmohan Singh changed lives and strengthened India’s reputation in the world.”

From rights to the economy, united with the United Nations, they made every effort to leave no one behind.
