Israel targeted shelters set up in school buildings and surrounding areas on Wednesday. Outraged, the UN agency said it was the highest number of personnel killed in an accident.
At least 34 people are reported to have died in the attack. UNRWA reported that shelter managers and other team members were attacked.
The top UN official said in a message on social media platform X that what is happening in Gaza is completely unacceptable and this violation of humanitarian law must stop immediately.
An Israeli attack on Wednesday hit a school in the war-torn Palestinian territory of Gaza, which was run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and converted into a shelter for displaced people.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters at his headquarters in New York on Wednesday that efforts were being made to confirm whether any UNRWA staff were killed in the attack on the New Nusirat school.
The school has been approved by Israeli authorities as a demilitarized zone following past investigations.
The UN spokesman said it was the fifth attack in the same location in the past 11 months.
Polio vaccination campaign continues
Meanwhile, health workers continue their campaign to administer polio vaccine doses to children in northern Gaza.
According to the World Health Organization, as of Tuesday, more than 81,600 children throughout the Gaza Strip have received polio vaccine doses.
It is worth noting that polio infection was confirmed in Gaza in June and after that, United Nations agencies launched an operation to administer polio vaccine doses to about 640,000 children under the age of 10 in Gaza.
So far, about 528,000 children in the Gaza Strip have been dosed.
Poor health system
The polio vaccine campaign in Gaza is being carried out at a time when the entire health system there has completely collapsed.
OCHA, the United Nations emergency coordination agency, and its partners say that half of the drugs needed in Gaza are not available, while primary health centers have very low supplies of insulin.
In addition, the amount of routine vaccines that protect children against TB, diphtheria, tetanus and other diseases has also been greatly reduced.
Israeli military operations in the West Bank
The United Nations and its partner agencies continue to provide assistance to those affected by Israel’s military operations over the past 10 days in Jenin and Tulkarm. Among those receiving this aid are people living in nearby refugee camps.
This aid includes food and water.
Damage and displacement
Hundreds of people in the area, including many children, have been left homeless. About 2,400 residential units were damaged, of which about 100 were uninhabitable.
During the Israeli military operation, more than two and a half kilometers of water and sewage lines were destroyed in Tulkarm and Nur Shams refugee camps, disrupting the supply of essential services.
As a result of this situation, more than 33,000 residents are experiencing water supply disruptions and filth has been lying on the surface for the past two weeks.
