HTI: Violence of criminal groups, full anarchy and risk of falling on public systems

Representatives of the UN Salvado member states told that in the present situation there is a threat to the state’s power to maintain public system in the country and the capital is trying to cripple.

In recent times, the criminal team has also targeted the regions of Haiti, which was unclear before their activities. “This level of violence has created splash and fear in the local population.”

This year, more than a thousand people were killed and about 400 were injured in February and March, when about 60,000 people were displaced. Total, at the end of 2024, 10 million citizens were already displaced.

Disappointment

Due to uninterrupted violence, a large number of people have created groups to protect their property, families and communities. There is frustration among the general public and thousands of people have taken to the streets and have demanded protection for themselves.

According to UN representatives, the local administration has taken its limited opportunities to improve the protection of the local administration, but they have been insufficient and therefore the support of international community needs to be increased.

Maria Isabel Salvador said that at this important stage, the member states need to increase their support for Haiti’s security forces, especially multinational protection assistance missions.

“This country we already need more already.”

The Protection Council approved the multinational mission in October 2021. This is an international security initiative under which the national police of Haiti will be assisted in dealing with gang violence and restoring the public system.

Kenya is leading the mission, but there are challenges due to lack of resources and security personnel.

UN effect on effectiveness

Every aspect of Haiti’s life has been influenced by the current crisis. Port-O-Prince flights and important security routes are closed, which have raised pressure on the UN assistance campaign and parties are forced to reduce their activities.

This campaign is becoming more vulnerable because of the decrease in financial assistance. In view of this, the UN representative has issued a warning that if the support is further deducted, it will have serious consequences.

Health and education services have been affected by the worse the situation. Due to insecurity, more than 900 schools and 39 health centers have been closed so far.

There is an outbreak of cholera disease and there is an enthusiasm for sexual and gender-based violence, especially in displacement camps where there is a lack of suitable shelter, cleanliness and protection.

Maria Isabel Salvador said that national agencies were making every effort to maintain protection in Haiti, but they lack adequate resources and foreign assistance to deal with armed groups.

According to him, if international support is not provided on time, the violence will continue faster and the country can completely crack.
