UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric reiterated that all warring parties must fulfill their obligations under international law. Also, ordinary citizens and civic institutions must be protected.
He said peacekeepers under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission (UNIFIL) are deployed along the ‘Blue Line’, the border line separating Lebanon and Israel, but the current conflict has also affected them.
“In South Lebanon, peacekeepers reported continued Israeli military operations and clashes with Hezbollah. “Meanwhile, Hezbollah continues to launch drone and rocket attacks into southern Israel.”
Earlier on Saturday, an installation of a United Nations installation in the Merkabah was damaged during Israel’s demolition process.
In another blast, a UN mission vehicle was hit near Nakora headquarters.
The UN spokesman called on all warring parties to immediately stop the violence. “The United Nations will continue its support for efforts toward a diplomatic solution and ceasefire.”
Aid promotion
Meanwhile, the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has provided medical supplies and fuel for generators in the Palestinian camp of Burj Shimali in Tyre. Emergency relief items have been provided to displaced women, children and men in other parts of the city.
On Saturday, a humanitarian convoy distributed food and hygiene items in the Baalbek-Hermel area. Another convoy delivered essential medical supplies to Labweh Primary Health Centre.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the situation in Lebanon is extremely alarming and has already surpassed the intensity of the 2006 war, but the conflict is still escalating.
The UN spokesman said the healthcare sector was under attack and it was becoming increasingly difficult for clinics, staff and resources to escape gunfire. This poses challenges to an already fragile system in Lebanon.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 110 health workers have died while providing their services in Lebanon since October 2023. At least 60 healthcare facilities have been attacked in the past 13 months.
