According to media reports, the coordinated attack targeted members of the extremist group Hezbollah who were using electronic pager devices to exchange information.
It was reported that on Tuesday, the devices of members of the Hezbollah group exploded at the same time, killing many people and injuring thousands, many of them seriously.
UN Coordinator Hannis-Plassert said in a statement that the development reflects an alarming situation and escalating conflict, in an environment that is already fragile.
He said all parties concerned must ensure that civilians are not targeted and are protected at all times in line with international law.
The impact of the attack is not yet fully clear, but the UN official expressed concern that provocative statements or any such actions, which could incite conflict in the entire region, should be avoided.
According to him, this risk cannot be taken.
The Special Coordinator highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and urged all parties to prioritize stability, as much is at stake.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) team is busy providing support to Lebanese hospitals in light of the current emergency. Due to the explosion of large numbers of pager devices, there is an influx of people seeking medical help.
