Syria: 1.15 lakh citizens have returned home since the fall of the Assad regime

This information is based on information from host countries of Syrian refugees, border control agencies and immigration services inside Syria.

Citing Turkey’s interior ministry, UNHCR said 35,113 Syrian nationals had voluntarily decided to return to their country. 22 thousand people entered Syria from Jordan, of which 3,100 were registered as refugees.

There are still about 664,000 newly displaced people in Syria, mainly living in Idlib and Aleppo governorates. Three-fourths of them are women and children.

About 486,000 internally displaced people have returned to their places of origin, including Hama and Aleppo.

The UN agency said the situation here remains insecure and clashes between armed groups, increased activity of criminal elements and unexploded explosives are being recovered.

In this situation, challenges remain for ordinary citizens and may affect the decision of Syrians living outside the country to return to their country.

Huge demand

The UN refugee agency is in constant contact with the Syrian caretaker administration and held a meeting with the governor’s office in Daraa on Sunday to discuss the current humanitarian needs.

The UNHCR team visited border crossings, observed existing procedures and asked returning people about their preferences and needs.

According to one estimate, the rehabilitation of 200 partially damaged houses in rural areas of the capital Damascus has begun, which is likely to be completed by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, humanitarian relief supplies and winter essentials have been provided to returning families and other displaced persons in Damascus, Homs and Idlib governorates.
