Syria: Desperate situation for 1.25 lakh refugees to return to their country

In light of this, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has called on the international community to move beyond promises and focus now on action to provide assistance to people struggling in vulnerable situations.

Many families do not have adequate shelter and have limited means of survival.

Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, the UN refugee agency’s representative in Syria, said that high-level international corridors in recent weeks have called for a rapid recovery and reconstruction process.

“But, until we turn words into action, for many returnees… their new life in Syria is, unfortunately, sleeping on plastic sheets.”

An important meeting of the Security Council was held on Wednesday to discuss the peaceful future of Syria in the face of challenging situation.

After 14 years of civil war, the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad fell on December 8. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other armed groups quickly established control over several cities, including the capital Damascus.

Since then, humanitarian agencies have returned to Syria, but the country’s towns and cities have been devastated, requiring massive aid efforts to rebuild.

In addition to the return of refugees, nearly half a million people displaced within the country’s borders by the war also returned to northwestern Syria by the end of last year.

According to the UN humanitarian office, before the fall of the Assad regime, 7.4 million people were internally displaced in Syria.

Of these, 2.3 million people are living in camps built for displaced persons. A total of 1 crore 67 lakh people of the country are dependent on humanitarian aid.

Foreign representatives of Italy, France, Germany, Britain and the United States, as well as the European Union, are meeting on Thursday to discuss the situation in Syria after the Security Council talks.
