Syria: The fall of the Assad government, 'Opportunity to Eliminate Chemical Weapons Stock'

The high representative Isumumi Fatamitsu welcomed the steps raised by the new acting administration in Syria to communicate and interact with the Chemical Weapons Prohibition Organization (OPCW).

He said that Syria has begun to follow international law and this moment should be used to deal with all the pending issues associated with the country’s chemical weapons.

Isumi Nakamitsu mentioned the 2118 proposal of the Protection Council, which was unanimously passed on September 27.

After the severe attack on Sarin gas in the Gauta Gauda Syria, the proposal was mandatory to eradicate chemical weapons. The gas attack killed 1,127 and more than six thousand people were suffering from health complexity.

In this proposal, the OPCW inspection from Syria has demanded a complete announcement of chemical weapons to declare and destroy.

Syria joined the chemical weapons agreement in the 21st. From that point on, OPCW has expressed concern that there is doubt about providing accurate, complete information in this regard.

Isumumi Nakamitsu said that the former Syrian administration did not give complete information about the chemical weapons program and it was possible that chemical weapons were created despite the contract stamped.

New chapter of cooperation

According to the high representative, the former president Assad was anxious during this rule, but the new acting administration has expressed his desire to move forward.

OPCW Director General went to Damascus on February 8 and met with top Syrian officials who assured to stop chemical weapons programs.

The caretaker Foreign Minister has appointed an officer whose responsibility is to participate in the meeting with OPCW and implement a 9-point action plan for Syria. An OPCW team is also likely to be deployed in Damascus soon so that a permanent presence can be started in the country.

Fight in the coastal region

The high representative warned that the future of Syria was challenging, because the country is still fighting the humanitarian crisis, protection and reconstruction challenges.

He told the representatives of the member states that strong support from Syrian international partners to get rid of all Syrian chemical weapons was needed.

According to him, it is not only a national priority, but also a matter of regional and global protection.

Meanwhile, according to news media, there was a serious battle between the former president’s military and the former president’s loyal soldiers in the Syrian coastal region, where about 70 people were feared to be killed.

Among them are an employee of the UN Agency (UNRW) for Palestinian refugees who came to their house after work and came under fire.

The UN special envoy Gyer Padresson has applied for restraint by expressing concern over the ground situation. He said that information related to development is being collected, but all parties have to introduce restraint and ensure the protection of the general citizens according to international law.
