The food crisis is deepened due to the battle and climate push of South Sudan

The World Food Program (WFP) has warned that it will be difficult to provide food assistance to billions of people due to money and work.

The WFP began providing emergency food assistance through the air route in the upper blue region in early July. Thousands of people were forced to leave their homes because of the growing violence here and the community reached the doorstep of starvation.

According to the IPC platform, the situation across the country is worrying. Half of the country’s population, ie more than 77 million people are facing food insecurity, out of which more than 3,000 people are facing starvation of “destructive” levels.

Carl Sku, deputy executive director of WFP, said after the tour of South Sudan, “The pain does not come here, but millions of parents and children are fighting hunger every day.”

The most affected regions include the upper blue state, where thousands of people have been displaced and preventing relief due to violence. Two districts like Nasir and Ung are at the doorstep of starvation.

South Sudan achieved independence in the 21st. After that, the Civil War began in the country, which ended in 2018 through a peace agreement.

However, due to the recent political pressure and violent attacks, especially in the high blue state, the agreement is on the verge of resolving again.

The ongoing war in the neighboring country has increased the crisis of Sudan. From April 2021, about 1.2 million people crossed the border to South Sudan, many of which were hungry, emotional trauma and without any assistance.

The WFP has said that 2 million children across the country are now at risk of malnutrition.

Things are fine

Despite the difficult situation, the WFP has so far provided emergency food assistance to more than 2 million people this year.

The 10 districts where the war has decreased, people have returned to their land, which has improved crop production and food protection.

WFP has provided 430 metric ton of food items for 40,000 people to the larger upper blue area to reach the most infected and remote areas.

The river route has become the most effective way to assist in the country with limited infrastructure. At the same time, the WFP human airline is still operating regular flights in seven places of the High Nile.

Meanwhile, cholera infection spread across the upper blue has put extra pressure on relief effort.

WFP says it is capable of helping only 25 million people at the moment, it is half the ration form many times. If the .4 27.4 million dollars is not received soon, the assistance will start from September.

“We have resources and powers, but without financial shapes and peace, we are bound,” the director said.
