UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made the announcement in a global call for support for future summits that begin on September 22.
“We need global solidarity today and for future generations, better management of key issues of global concern and a new United Nations,” the UN secretary-general said Thursday at the Global Call for a Future summit event, adding that the challenges could face the new era.
He emphasized that the existing institutions should be able to adapt themselves to the needs of the changing times.
At future summits, member states are expected to complete negotiations before adopting a future agreement.
This will pave the way for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing emerging challenges and opportunities.
A declaration on a global digital compact and future generations will also be adopted at the conference.
Antonio Guterres said that although the future summit will only take place on September 22 and 23, it has taken years to get here.
In the vortex of time
The UN chief warned that today’s challenges are moving faster than the resources or tools available to solve them.
And this is because of the old institutions, which were designed for another age and another world.
He said the Security Council is stuck in a time warp, the international financial architecture is outdated and ineffective, and lacks effective tools and resources to address many of the world’s emerging problems.
A call for vision, courage, solidarity
The UN chief urged member states to act with speed, vision, courage, solidarity and a spirit of accommodation to reach consensus on three draft agreements to achieve the goals of the future conference.
Antonio Guterres praised the UN as a forum that provides a gathering place for key stakeholders, especially in times of global unrest.
“I call on all governments to be as ambitious as possible in restoring the level of hope and confidence needed to meet the great challenges of our time,” he urged, including a new global unity.
