The UN chief said in a video message that more than 1,250 Israelis and foreigners, including children and women, have been killed in Hamas attacks. More than 250 people, including many women and children, have been detained in Gaza.
The UN Secretary-General said, “One year after the horrific attacks that destroyed the lives of Palestinians in Gaza and created mountains of suffering for the Arab Lebanese people as well, the war continues.
“The October 7 attack shook the soul – and today we remember all those who were brutally killed and who suffered unimaginable violence – including sexual violence, while she was just living her life.”
Antonio Guterres said this is a day when the world community should strongly condemn the heinous actions of Hamas. These acts also included taking people hostage.
“Over the past year, I have met the families of the hostages – learning about the lives, hopes and dreams of their loved ones… and feeling their anxiety and pain.”
“I can’t imagine the pain they go through every day. Once again, I demand the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. “Until then, Hamas must allow the International Committee of the Red Cross access to all hostages.”
Time to silence the gun
The UN Secretary General said that October 7 is naturally an occasion to reflect on the events of that fateful day. “I express my solidarity with all the victims and their loved ones.”
“From October 7, a massive wave of violence and bloodshed began. I have often and openly expressed my views on this matter.
The UN Secretary General said, the time has come to release the hostages. Guns should be silenced. The problems that have accumulated in the area should come to an end. This is the time – for peace, international law and justice.
“The United Nations is fully committed to achieving these goals. In the face of massive bloodshed and division, we must hold on to hope.”
“Let us honor the memory of the victims, reunite families and end the suffering and violence throughout the Middle East region,” he said.
“And, let us never stop our efforts to find a long-term solution to this conflict where Israel, Palestine and other countries in the region can finally live in peace and dignity and respect each other.”
