China’s foreign minister said at the high-level general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly that his country has launched a Group of Friends for Peace together with Brazil and other countries in the Global South to achieve this goal.
He said the main goals of the group are to uphold the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, build consensus for a political solution to the crisis and contribute to the prospect of peace.
China’s foreign minister has indicated that the Palestine question is the “biggest wound” for people’s conscience.
Wang Yi said that the ongoing war in Gaza is causing casualties every day, despite all this, war has also started in Lebanon.
But power cannot take the place of judgment. “The Palestinian desire for an independent state can no longer be undermined and the historic injustices suffered by the Palestinian people must not be ignored.”
The Chinese foreign minister drew attention to China’s partnership with African countries and some LDCs and expressed opposition to unilateral coercive measures such as sanctions and blockades as well as supply chain disruptions.
He called on the United States to lift the embargo and embargo against Cuba and to remove the definition of terrorism.
Green way, climate problem
Wang Yi also highlighted the country’s commitment to green, low-carbon and sustainable development.
“We will achieve carbon neutrality in the shortest time in history and contribute to the global effort for harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature,” he said.
Wang Yi stressed that the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities must be upheld and the Paris Agreement on climate change implemented as soon as possible.
Developing countries need to help develop their capacity to deal with climate change.
The foreign minister also emphasized China’s support for reforming and modernizing the United Nations as well as making the international financial system fit for purpose.
He called on the UN to “listen to the legitimate calls” of developing countries and increase the representation and voice of the global South.
He noted that next year will be the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the founding of the United Nations.
