UNGA79: Mutual cooperation is needed to tackle climate crisis, inequality and conflict - Nepal

Prime Minister Oli warned of the dangers posed by climate destruction, resurgent geopolitical rivalries and increased military spending on humanity.

“Both ordinary citizens and the planet are on the brink of climate destruction.” He said, Nepal is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world in terms of disasters.

He said that the mountain agenda should be kept at the forefront of climate talks, which play an important role in ensuring climate stability. In this sequence, he said that Nepal is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045.

He also pointed out the disparity between rich and poor countries and criticized the concentration of wealth only in developed countries. At the same time, according to him, the least developed countries including Nepal are still mired in poverty, deprivation and destitution.

Prime Minister Oli called for strong leadership and meaningful cooperation to eliminate these inequalities. This year, the theme of the general debate at the 79th session of the General Assembly is to leave no one behind and he reiterated that we must work together for peace, sustainable development and human dignity.

He emphasized that Nepal has long cherished the principle of inclusion, which is enshrined in its constitution. It considers human rights, proportional representation and social protection for vulnerable communities.

From the dais of the General Assembly, the Nepalese leader reiterated his commitment to peace and non-intervention based on the principles of sovereign equality and mutual respect.

He said Nepal has made solid progress in the peace process after emerging from violent conflict and a comprehensive peace agreement was signed in 2006.

Prime Minister Oli said that Nepal is a major contributor to UN peacekeeping missions. He applied for more representation in leadership positions in the organization so that his contribution could be reflected.

Given the current challenges facing the world, they were not imposed on us by the inhabitants of other planets and we alone are responsible for them. But these can be overcome through mutual understanding, trust and cooperation.

Prime Minister Oli in his closing remarks referred to the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, enshrined in the Maha Upanishad – the belief that the entire world is one family.

He said that through this resolution, Nepal is ready to contribute to the common desire for peace, progress and prosperity and no one should be left behind.
