UNGA79: The future of the Lebanese people is at stake right now - Foreign Minister

Addressing the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Foreign Minister Bouhabib said that today we need to play the role of the United Nations – to shelter small countries under aggression, including my country Lebanon.

He condemned the Israeli attack and called for an immediate end to the current conflict.

This Lebanese leader said that the main reason for the current situation in Lebanon is not solving the crisis caused by the occupation.

“Claiming any other reason would be a waste of time…the longer the occupation goes on, the more instability and war there will be.”

Foreign Minister Bouhabib said the war and aggression in Lebanon continues and attacks are being carried out on the country’s border areas. Civilian telecommunication equipment has been converted into bombs, exploding simultaneously and killing and maiming large numbers of people.

He said, when the world seems to be backing away from such aggression, the declaration of America, France and other friendly countries is welcome. This includes exploring the possibility of long-term peace and stability in the border areas and the return of displaced people.

The foreign minister said that Lebanon has been trying to resolve the border dispute with Israel through the United Nations for a long time, but Israel has shown indifference in this regard.

“We seek refuge in the decisions of international law,” including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which Lebanon also helped draft.

“While the UN has yet to protect us from Israeli aggression, we remain committed to this organization as a frontline defense against occupation, violence and repression.”

Faced with this harsh reality, Lebanon believes that dialogue is a viable alternative to war.

Foreign Minister Buhbib said his country’s determination to resolve the crisis reflects the importance of the international community’s cooperation and support in promoting peace and security in his country.

He said Lebanon is doing everything possible to avoid Israel’s trap and is looking for ways to prevent the war from prolonging.

“Isn’t Israel tired of war since 1948? When will Israel want peace? When will he stop using the language of anger and destruction?
