New Year's message: Call for emissions reductions and 'back off the path of destruction'

Referring to the challenge of 2024, Secretary-General Guterres noted that hope is rare. “Many wars are spreading immeasurable pain, suffering and displacement.”

“Growing Inequality and Division – Fueling Tensions and Mistrust.”

Time is running out

Drawing attention to the climate crisis, he issued a warning saying that we have just seen a decade of extreme heat. “The 10 warmest years on record occurred within the last 10 years, including 2024. It’s climate chaos — for real.”

In this context, the UN chief has called for an end to this path of destruction and warned that we have no time to lose.

“In 2025, countries must lead the world on a safer path by making deep reductions in carbon emissions and supporting the transition to a renewable future.”

Change based on hope

Secretary-General Guterres said that even in the darkest days, change is possible with the power of hope.

“I see hope in workers – young and old – when they raise their voices for progress. “I find hope in extraordinary people who overcome great obstacles to help the most vulnerable.”

The UN chief said he sees developing countries struggling for financial and climate justice and hopes for new discoveries for humanity in scientists and innovators.

“I saw hope in September, when world leaders came together to pass a future treaty that gives new energy to peacemaking through disarmament and deterrence.”

The agreement aims to reform the global financial system, create greater opportunities for women and youth, create protections for technologies that serve citizens rather than profits, and prioritize algorithms over rights.

A united nation

He said, we must always stick to the values and principles of human rights, international law and the UN Charter.

According to the UN chief, no guarantees can be made about what will happen in 2025.

“But I pledge to stand with those working to build a more peaceful, equal, stable and healthy future for all people.”

He emphasized that together, we can make 2025 a fresh start: not a divided world. Rather as a united country.
